BLURB:
One stormy summer night, Olive and her best friend, Rose, begin to lose things. It starts with simple items like hair clips and jewellery, but soon it’s clear that Rose has lost something bigger; something she won’t talk about.
Then Olive meets three wild, mysterious strangers: Ivy, Hazel and Rowan. Like Rose, they’re mourning losses - and holding tight to secrets.
When they discover the ancient spellbook, full of hand-inked charms to conjure back lost things, they realise it might be their chance to set everything right. Unless it’s leading them towards secrets that were never meant to be found . . .
EXPECTATIONS: I first heard of this book on booktuber from a person that really liked witches. As a matter of fact that person really loved this book and me in need of good witchy books just dived right in without a moment of hesitation.
THE WORLD: Majority of the story we are in the usual ordinary world. We are told a story of a few teenagers living in a little town who are concerned with usual teenager problems etc but from time to time we suddenly travel sorta through time to seemly same world just like ours but then surroundings become magical and the whole experience is a bit weird in my opinion. I did like the story part that took place in ordinary today way more than weird lapses into something else. The reason I am saying something else and not describing this magical world more is because there is a big twist in it and so doing so would cause spoilers and jup, nobody wants that.
CHARACTERS: Our main characters are called Olive and Rose. They are two teenager girls seemly living a normal spoiled teenager lives with their teenager problems till one day they find this book called 'Spellbook of Lost and Found' and things start to happen. Now I don't want to spoil anything so let's just briefly talk about this Olive and Rose creations. Frankly I disliked Olive big time, she was so so self absorbed and just a worst type of teenager ever. And the Rose is supposed to be her best friend but frankly I saw zero of that. Neither Rose nor Olive really talk like best friends do and they don't care to tell their secrets or even their crush each others. Paints me too girly here but what best friends do not share their thoughts on new crushes? In this book it was even opposite, they were actively keeping it secret from each other. And no they did not have a crush on same person as that to be a reason. In general I felt like Rose was often a prop even tho she is supposed to be one of main character...so yes too much teenagers and too much tell but not enough do or show.
ROMANCE: It was actually a bit creepy. I mean there are queer romances but then there are heterosexual romance and that was just so so creepy.
GOOD: I liked the witchy part I guess, even tho it was not really that good.
BAD: This whole story is really about some teenagers stealing diary pages of other teenagers and then these teenagers taking revenge. Also there is some serious stalking and possible rape? Tho that was never really confirmed.
OVERALL: Was definitely not impressed. If you love YA and are desperate for witches then go for it but if you are tired of YA tropes and teenagers made look stupid then I would not recommend it.
