SYNOPSIS: Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He's short, he's fast, he's got a ton of potential—and he's the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as The Butcher.

Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile and he doesn't need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny and the truth will get him killed.

But Neil's not the only one with secrets on the team. One of Neil's new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can't walk away from him a second time. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he's finally found someone and something worth fighting for.
These books are all over Tumblr. Seriously, literally everyone on my dash is raving about them and they just talk about how much they love the books or X character. Well, I needed to know what the fuss was about so here I am, reading it. WARNING: IT CONTAINS DRUGS, ALCOHOL, VIOLENCE. If you're very sensitive to these things abstain from this series.

(Thank God it's a short one because it's so easy and fast to read... it's perfect for a student)

THE WORLD: Normal world. Although I have to say these kids' lives are everything but normal, jesus christ they're all messed up. The only difference in this world is that now there is a new "bastard" sport called Exy which is apparently a mixture of Lacrosse and Hockey tactics or something like that.

Here is a picture I took from Tumblr (all credit to the owner) of what an Exy field might look like:

You can read about the rules and regulations here (+ cool pics!)

CHARACTERS: The main character is Neil Josten (striker), he's a runaway with a tragic past and an unsecured future. Because he's on the run he has to disguise himself and keep it low profile so that he doesn't get murdered (yes, it is that bad) but the only thing he cannot give away is Exy. He loves playing and he's good so he gets recruited by Palmetto State's Foxes as a sub and then things get even more complicated because he's exposed to the public and national TVs...
The whole book revolves around Exy so the other characters are his team mates: Kevin Day (ex famous elite player and now striker), Danielle Wilds (the captain and offensive dealer, yes! a girl!), Andrew Minyard (goalkeeper. He's a psycho), Aaron Minyard (backliner. Andrew's twin), Nicky Hemmick (backliner. Minyards' cousin), Matt Boyd (backliner. He's the only male with common sense), Renee Walker (goalkeeper. She seems a cutie pie but it's suspicious), Seth Gordon (striker. Whinny and not interesting), and Allison Reynolds (defensive dealer. Bitchy queen bee). The secondary characters are: the coach David Wymack, the nurse Abby Winfield, and the psychologist Betsy Dobson.

LOVE: There's barely any romantic love. But there are a few relationships going on among the Foxes and a few other hints of possible (coming-up?) couples.

PLUS: The story is actually super interesting and catchy! Also the fact that the main character is not a psycho helps a lot. He's like a scared but brave puppy. I also found myself enjoying reading about Exy, is like reading about Quidditch for the first time you know? Confusing but fun.

Also a big plus is that the book features strong females, race minorities, different sexualities, etc and treats them as equal. Thank you Nora.

MINUS: Apart from the fact that everyone's a psycho I liked everything... I wish there were more answers but I understand as this is only the first book and the author needs to keep the readers' interest in the books. And she does.

OVERALL: 4 stars. I need answers! Even though the story revolves around a fictional sport, the characters and their stories are messed up and interesting. I have to say the only characters I like so far are Neil, Renee, and Matt because the rest of the team members are nuts but I am willing to give them a chance. Off to read the second book!!!
